Many individuals within our Huntington's and Juvenile Huntington's disease
community are in need of assistance. It is important to readdress the
Compassionate Allowances (CAL) for our community. There are too many
individuals who are without these necessary benefits, however there is hope!

As per SocialSecurity.gov, "Compassionate Allowances (CAL) are a way of quickly identifying
diseases and other medical conditions that invariably qualify under the Listing of Impairments based
on minimal objective medical information. Compassionate Allowances allow Social Security to target
the most obviously disabled individuals for allowances based on objective medical information that
we can obtain quickly. Compassionate Allowances is not a separate program from the Social
Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income programs."
The July 13, 2012 press release from Social Security was titled:
"Social Security to Add Adult Huntington’s Disease to Compassionate Allowances Program"
Prior to a brief description of Woody Guthrie, the press release went on to say, "The Social Security
Administration will add symptomatic Huntington’s Disease to its Compassionate Allowances program
for adults by the end of the year. The expedited disability process will identify people with significant
symptoms of this devastating neurological disease. Adult Huntington’s Disease will accompany the
designation of Juvenile Huntington’s Disease as a Compassionate Allowance condition, which will be
effective next month." [August 11, 2012 - 71 - Juvenile Onset Huntington Disease].
